As you read everyone’s articles on new years resolutions and possibly consider your own, keep in mind one very important concept that you probably won’t hear much about. The power of the unconscious.
New year resolutions (NYR) are often about creating a new habit or eliminating one. Regardless of whether we want to create or eliminate a habit, its much easier if we enlist our unconscious. Subconscious process is the usual reason why we repeat the same behaviors despite promises to do better. Goal setting is nice, but without a full fledged strategy – one that also enlists our unconscious – those goals can remain out of reach.
Without understanding the underlying subconscious motivation behind your behaviors and decisions, chances are you’ll repeat them. Teaching and showing how to enlist the unconscious is a big part of what I do as a performance coach. Every day – not just the beginning of a new year – can be an opportunity for a ‘NYR’.
